Bu çalışma sözlük gibi hepimizin bildiği veya bildiğini kabul ettiğimiz bir kavrama biraz daha yakından bakma denemesidir. Yakından bakmak bazı kabullerimizi sarsabileceği gibi sözlüğü daha iyi anlamamızı sağlayabilir. Sözlükler, “ihtiyaç olduğunda bakılıp yerine kaldırılır” anlayışından daha fazla ilgiyi hak etmektedir. Her şeyden önce sözlüğün nasıl bir ihtiyaçtan kaynaklandığı üzerinde durmak ve bundan hareketle ruhunu kavramaya çalışmak önemlidir. Zamanımızda bilginin çeşitliği ve hızla eskiyor oluşu sözlükleri de değiştirmiş, farklı ihtiyaçlara cevap veren pek çok sözlük hayatımıza girmiştir. Sanal âlemin bilgiyi hızla üretip güncelleyebilmesi pek çok sözlüğün sanal âleme taşınmasına sebep olsa da basılı ya da basılı olmaksızın sözlük, hayatımızdaki önemini korumaya devam etmiştir. Çalışma özellikle sözlüğün ne olduğuna odaklanmakta, sözlüğün ne olduğunu anlatmanın yanında ne olmadığı üzerinde de durarak sonuca ulaşmaktadır.
This study aims to have a closer look on the dictionary, a concept we all know, or we accept that everyone knows. Having a closer look on this concept may unsettle our acceptances as well as it may enable us to understand the dictionary better. Sources as dictionary deserve more attention than perceiving it as “to be referred when necessary, and then to put back to its place”. First of all, it is important to lay stress on what kind of need the dictionary derives from and to try to comprehend its spirit accordingly. Today, the diversity of information and the fact that it becomes outdated quickly have changed the dictionaries as well, and many dictionaries that address to different needs have taken their place in our life. Whereas the quick production and update of information in the virtual world has caused to import many dictionaries to that world, the dictionary has maintained its importance in our life, whether it is in printed form or not. This study focuses especially on what a dictionary is and comes to a result by not only explaining what a dictionary is buy also laying stress on what a dictionary is not.
