İslâm tarihinde “Hulefâ-yı Râşidîn” olarak bilinen Dört Halife Devri, Hz. Muhammed’in ölümünden sonraki otuz yıllık dönemi kapsamaktadır. Bu dönemde Hz. Muhammed’in peygamberlik hayatı boyunca kendisine inanan arkadaşlarından/sahabelerden Hz. Ebû Bekir, Hz. Ömer, Hz. Osman ve Hz. Ali halifelik yapmışlardır. Çalışmada, Süleymaniye Kütüphanesi “Özel 130” numarada kayıtlı ve 23 varaktan müteşekkil “Hikâyet” başlıklı yazma eser değerlendirilecektir. Çalışmanın amacı, dört halife dönemi hakkında halk arasında anlatılmak üzere kaleme alınan menkıbelerin işlevlerini açıklamaktır. Metinde yer alan motifler, S. Thompson’un “Motif Index of Folk Literature” isimli eserine göre incelenmiştir. Çalışma metni, toplumsal çeşitliliği ele alan P. Burke’nin kültür yorumu esasında açıklanmıştır. Metnin muhteva yapısı ise metin merkezli halkbilim kuramlarından, “Seçkin Kültürün Dibe Batması” çerçevesinde değerlendirilmiştir. Çalışmanın sonunda, tarafımızdan ilk defa tespiti yapılıp okunmuş olan yazma eserin transkripsiyonlu metni verilmiştir. Menkıbeler, İslâmî bilgilerin sözlü ve yazılı kültür aracılığıyla aktarılmasını sağlamaktadır. Bu bağlamda ele alınan konu, Türk kültüründe İslâmî değerlere atfedilen kutsallığı göstermesi bakımından önem arz etmektedir.
