INVESTIGATION OF COGNITIVE STRUCTURES OF PRESERVICE BIOLOGY AND GEOGRAPHY TEACHERS REGARDING SOME ECOLOGICAL CONCEPTS


The aim of this study is to determine the cognitive structures of preservice biology and geography teachers regarding the key concepts of ‘ecosystem, community, population and habitat’, which are among the basic ecological concepts. The working group of the research in the faculty of education at a state university in Turkey Biology and Geography Education is a total of 56 teachers studying at 4th grade. In the research, ‘word association test’ (WAT) was used as a data collection tool. According to the frequency table prepared according to the answers given by the preservice biology and geography teachers to the word association test, a total of 91 preservice biology teachers related to key concepts; It is concluded that preservice geography teachers use a total of 95 words. It was determined that preservice biology teachers produced more words than preservice geography teachers who produced 182 words in total and 165 words in total. Also, when analyzed on the basis of key concepts, it is understood that the number of words produced related to ecosystem, community and population concepts is in favor of preservice biology teachers. According to these findings, it can be concluded that preservice biology teachers have more developed cognitive structures related to key concepts than preservice geography teachers.
