AN INTERDISCIPLINARY READING TRY: THE “EAST” AND THE “TURKISH” IMAGES FROM CERVANTES’ PERSPECTIVE

Individuals, communities, and nations have historical memories influencing their views of the present. Such memories are among the determiners of agents’ images of “other” The construction of “other” in minds is influenced by works written about “other” as well as by historical, social, and political factors. From past to present, also with the unignorable effect of orientalism, the East has been considered as “other” in the face of the West from this perspective. Especially the works about the East written by orientalist travelers have provided examples concerning this judgment in a lot of areas with the negative determinations and approaches they contain. Surely, there is a similar situation for the “Turkish” image along with the “East” conception. In this regard, the purpose of this study is to evaluate both the “East” image and the “Turkish” image not from the perspective of an orientalist traveler but from that of Cervantes, who had to get to know the East for certain indispensable reasons. Cervantes’s life is also full of adventures. It goes without saying that his relations with the East and Turks, among all these adventures, constitute another context. These relations manifest themselves in Cervantes’ works in various ways. This study analyzes such manifestations (the ways relations are reflected) through the determined works of the writer. With such analysis and evaluations, it is expected to make a contribution to research on the East and Turkish images in the face of the West.
