Abstract

ON DISTINCTION OF MEANING OF PRIMARY LONG VOWELS IN TURKMEN TURKISH
Long vowels in Turkish are preserved in modern Turkish literary languages such as modern Saka Language, Turkmen Turkish and Khalaj Language but have sustained in limited words in other literary languages. Long vowels of Turkish have been exposed to shortening and it has impressed some phonotheque traces such as palatalization, epenthesis, vowel duplication, vocalization, consonant epenthesis and gemination during shortening process. Primary long vowels in first syllable of words in Turkmen Turkish generally lead to semantic change. Within this context, it is hard to determine those. To determine the length of such words we have to refer to words themselves. Primary long vowels in first syllable of words in Turkmen Turkish have a characteristic of semantic differential. Long vowels in first syllable of words are homographic and differ from other words which are not primary vowels. Turkish words constitute the large part of primary long vowels which lead to semantic differential of words in Turkmen Turkish. Vowels that lead to semantic change consist of four categories; long vowel nouns which are equivalent of short vowels as verb, long vowel verbs which are equivalent of short vowels as noun, long vowel nouns which are equivalent of short vowels as noun and long vowel verbs which are equivalent of short vowels as verb. In this study, it is stated that words which are primary long vowels are homographic and differ from other words in terms of semantic way.
