USING CARTOONS IN SOCIAL STUDIES TEACHING (AN ACTION RESEARCH )


This study is conducted to reveal the effects of using caricatures when teaching a 6th grade social studies unit, “Our Country’s Resources” It is assumed that this study will give an idea to social studies teachers in terms of the importance of using cartoons their lessons. This is a practitioner-researcher action research that the researcher took place in study as practitioner. During the research period, expert opinions are taken into consideration while preparing the lesson plans. Meanwhile, lesson plans are developed to improve not only knowledge-base of students but also skills and values. Data was collected using student journals, semi-structured interviews with students, and the teacher’s journal. Analysis was carried out by content analysis method. According to the findings, using cartoons in social studies teaching are helpful to increase students’ attentions and motivations. Students are actively participated and was able to have fun in lessons. Besides, using cartoons in teaching and learning process helped students to comprehend abstract topics easier and to have positive learning outcomes.
