A REVIEW OF THE POEMS OF “HANDE-I BÛM” AND “GAYYÂ-YI VÜCÛD” THROUGH SEMIOTICS, COMPOSED BY TEVFIK FIKRET

Out of the founders of Servet-i Funun Literature (from 1896 to 1901), Tevfik Fikret is one of the poets promoting Turkish poetry up to the modern level. He uses his own temperament, mood and imagination as a source in his poets and falls into the clutches of severe pessimism since the age of 28-29 years, in particular. The poetry of Servet-i Funun is mainly characterized by melancholy, depression, and pessimism. It is known that there are several contributing factors including the political and social conditions in the reign of Abdulhamid II as well as the resulting innovations from Westernalization and the mental change. Mr Fikret symbolizes the themes of hatred for life and pessimism in his poems, “Hande-i Bûm” and “Gayyâ-yi Vücûd”, using similar symbols, and they include a number of common elements related to either the era or his temper. The studies on the contemporary semiotics of XIXth century help to analyze the superficial and profound meaning of the texts, from the textual signs. In this study, we will review the signs and symbols which reflect his melancholic and pessimistic mood in the poems of Tevfik Fikret, “Hande-i Bûm” (1898) and “Gayyâ-yı Vücûd” (1899), and describe a common semantic level between them.
