9TH GRADE STUDENTS’ PERCEPTION OF CONCEPTS RELATED TO PRE-ISLAMIC TURKISH HISTORY: METAPHOR ANALYSIS

The aim of history lessons is to cultivate citizens who know their nation’s history, values and culture. Pre-Islamic Turkish History is the first era in which Turks take part with a national identity. It is believed that the scarcity of visual and auditory materials and the low possibility and hardships of museum visits and field trips on this era obstruct learning. It is evaluated that students have difficulty in making sense of concepts related to this era, establishing empathy with the historical characteristics of the era, visualising the historical setting, and forming knowledge. These problems are thought to affect the students’ interest, attitude, and success in latter History lessons. The aim of this study is to identify the concepts in Pre-Islamic Turkish History through metaphor analysis. The study is limited within the “Eurasia in The First and Medieval Ages” unit of History lesson at 9th grade.
