THE PERCEPTION OF CIVILIZATION IN THE PERIOD OF ABDÜLHAMID II

Since the early days of history, people have always tended to live in communities. These people, who lived together, formed their own communities and rules that went along with those communities. But inevitably they also encountered other communities and developed various relationships with those who didn't belong to them. The formation of nations with modernization has led to the handling of these relations through the identity problem and the need for recognition and identification arose for the states. The ideas of nationalism rising in the 19th century have increased the importance of identity in this period and the existence and legitimacy of many empires that consist of various people was endangered. One of these states, the Ottoman Empire during the Abdülhamid II period, also entered the construction of a new identity and tried to maintain its existence. The aim of the study is to examine the identity construction during the period of Abdülhamid II via press, which has spread rapidly in Ottoman society as well as in the whole world during that time. In this direction, the issue was approached by analyzing the contents of the newspapers Tercüman-ı Hakikat, Ma’lûmât and Saâdet. As a result of the content analysis, the concept of "Civilization", which is frequently discussed in the newspapers, has been evaluated in terms of identity construction.
