The field of English language teaching (ELT) under applied linguistics contains many terms from especially linguistics and psychology. There are problems about the transfer of these terms to Turkish because most of them are of foreign origin. This in turn brings about terminological confusion. This qualitative study is based on document review and encompasses the identification of the main terms in ELT that pose problems during their transfer to Turkish, the identification of their Turkish equivalents in the related literature, and finally suggesting the ideal equivalents fort he terms. The terms in question under this study are authentic material, additive-subtractive bilingualism, code-switching, Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), corpus, critical age/period, extensive-intensive reading, face-threatening act, flipped learning, formative-summative assessment, fossilization, lingua franca, microteaching, minimal pair, scaffolding and washback/backwash effect. After these terms have been determined, their explanations in English from two different sources have been examined in detail; and the literal and intended meanings of the terms have been clarified. In this framework, different Turkish equivalents for the terms in various dictionaries and articles have been evaluated and a reasonable Turkish equivalent for each has been suggested considering especially their intended meanings. While some of the suggested Turkish equivalents have been selected from the existing alternatives in the literature, some have been suggested from scratch.
