THE MUDANYA CONFERENCE ACCORDING TO THE TURKISH PRESS

The Allies made an offer of armistice to the Ankara government after the military achievements that the Turkish army had attained in the Battle of Sakarya and, lastly, at the end of the Great Offensive. Mustafa Kemal Pasha responded to this offer on 29 September 1922, accepting a conference to be convened in Mudanya. Ismet Pasha, Commander of the Western Front, was appointed on behalf of the supreme military command as the delegate to the conference that convened on 3 October 1922. The Entente Powers, in turn, were represented by the British General Harington, the French General Charpy and the Italian General Monbelli. Ismet Pasha, the chief of the Turkish delegation, was elected as the chairman of the conference on the first day on which the negotiations began in the Mudanya Conference. The text of the armistice took its latest form after long debates. Many issues that constituted problems between the two sides were discussed such as primarily the withdrawal from Anatolia and Eastern Thrace as well as the status of Istanbul and the straits and the return of Karaağaç to the Turks, and a reconciliation was reached on certain principles. On 11th October, the agreed-upon text was signed by Ismet Pasha, Charpy and Monbelli. In this study, I have attempted to evaluate, based on the sources of the period, the process lasting from the liberation of Izmir to the days during which the Mudanya Conference was concluded.
