ADOPTING LINGUISTIC METHOD IN DETERMINING HISTORICAL GEOGRAPHY: THE BOOK OF DEDE KORKUT SAMPLE-I


It’s generally acceptable situation that The Book of Dede Korkut is national epos of Oghuz Turks, involves social memory formed in their homeland Syr Darya between 8th and 10th century and the places in which these stories set are Azerbaijan area includes East of Anatolia. This opinion was built through place names in the text or linguistic features of it by various researches. It seems that east and north-east group of Turkey Turkish dialects step forward in these studies in terms of place names and linguistic features. In this study, lexic analysis is done referring to the opinion accepts it is healtier to come to a conclusion through linguistic datas instead of comparing and determining place names. This lexical method is used on the purpose of determining which regions step forward among the east and north-east group dialects declared as a part of the places in which Dede Korkut stories set, by choosing fifty one lexeme from the text with respect to some criteria. Thus, it is aimed to give datas to the studies are about determining the historical geography of Dede Korkut stories.
