AN ASSESSMENT ON THE EXCLUSION OF CITIZENSHIP AND HUMAN RIGHTS EDUCATION COURSE FROM THE CURRICULUM OF SECONDARY SCHOOL

In this research, social studies teachers' opinions on the exclusion of citizen and human rights education course from the curriculum of 8th grade were examined. Of the qualitative research methods, the specific case (case method) method was used in the research. The sample group of the research consisted of 44 social studies teachers teaching in Adıyaman. The data of the research was collected through an interview form consisting of semi-structured questions and was analyzed through the descriptive analysis technique. As a result of the research, 95.45% of the teachers involved in the research were revealed to think that citizen and human rights education course should be employed in the curriculum of secondary school again. The teachers involved in the research thought that this course's being taken out of practice would cause insufficiency in terms of students' learning and internalizing democratic attitudes and values. It was revealed through the research that most of the teachers don't approve of handling citizenship and human rights education course as an intermediate discipline within the curriculum of social studies. While some of the teachers taking part in the research stated that this course could be taught the 4th graders, a great number of the teachers taking part in the research thought that some content and concepts of this course are not relevant to the 4th graders whose abstract thinking skills are not developed satisfactorily and this way, the course could not achieve its objectives.
