7TH GRADE MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS’ PERCEPTIONS OF SOCIAL STUDIES


This study aims to define and describe 7th grade middle school students’ perceptions of social studies as a concept and as a school subject. Designed as a phenomenological qualitative research, the current study employs 15 7th grade students attending to four different public middle schools located in the centre of Uşak province and Eşme sub-province. The research data collected through semi-structured interviews was subjected to thematic analysis. The findings indicate that social studies as general and broad concept reminds the participant the content of the subject they have been taught in the school. It was also found out that the participants’ conceptions of social studies comprises of the content knowledge included in social studies curriculum, the connections they were able to make between the course content and their actual daily lives and their interests of social studies arising from their experiences and viewpoints related to social studies lessons.
