Re-reading “The Bitter Lemons (Cyprus1956) as a Political and Cultural Disinformation Example Through Its Approach to The Turkish World

Acı Limonlar – Kıbrıs 1956- (Bitter Lemons – Cyprus 1956) is important not only in terms of what it says but also in terms of reflecting the perspective of its writer. Starting in the 1950’s, the separatist terror movements made the Cypriot Turks suffer a lot. The fact that the Cypriot Turks, despite all, had an attitude towards “peace” has been kept away from the attention of the World and the Turks have been shown as the reason of all. Bitter Lemons is an important novel as it depicts the impressions and prejudiced attitude of Lawrence Durrell, who lived in Cyprus between 1953 and 1956. Reading these approaches which reflect the collective subconscious of the western intellectuals and politicians is vital to understand the base of the negotiations – for the Greek and western part- carried at the moment.
