Some Thoughts on a Word Used in Turkish Dialects of Cyprus: Guduru

It is observed that the meaning of the word “guduru”, which is a word widely used in the Turkish Dialects of Cyprus, is not explained clearly in dictionaries. It is also observed that the word is explained with a narrow sense rather than its broad meaning in the Dialectical Dictionary of Modern Turkish. The meanings given in the three dictionaries of the Cypriot dialects are far from meeting the meanings of the usages used in the given examples of these dictionaries. Additionally they seem to be repetitions of each other. Another problem is the etymon of the word. Etymological data maintained by the dictionary named Etymological Dictionary of Cypriot Turkish is based on phonological resemblance rather than semantic relevancy. This situation poses an unenlightening prospect about the etymon of the word. This study tackles these questions related with both the etymological and semantic aspects of the word.
