Some Notes on the Past Tense Markers and Their Functions in the Turkish Dialects of Cyprus

This study deals with the past tense markers of the Turkish Dialects of Cyprus and their functions. These markers are compared and contrasted to those of Modern Standard Turkish and Old Anatolian Turkish. In cases of dissimilarities the reasons of these differences are tackled. An attempt is made to solve the problem whether these differences came into existence as a result of archaisms or language contact. The study has exposed that the parallelism, which is present between the Turkish Dialects of Cyprus and Modern Standard Turkish in the field of perfect tense, does not exist in the field of the pluperfect tense. The minor differences between the perfect tense markers of the two varieties of Turkish are formal and are a result of the fact that the Cypriot varieties are not standardized. However the functional dissimilarities are also very prominent between the pluperfect markers of the two varieties. Moreover, the formal differences between the pluperfect markers of the two varieties, unlike the perfect tense markers, are more than the allomorphs of the same marker. It is seen that suffixes used for other purposes in Modern Standard Turkish are used for marking the pluperfect tense in the Cypriot varieties.
