Some Methodological Problems In Turkish Dialectology

Research on regional varieties has a distinguished place in Turcology. But methodology is often neglected in Turkish language studies, except fruitful discussion critical text editions which are quite common in Turkish Turcology. On the other hand, there are a few studies dealing with methodology in dialectology recently. But issues raised in these studies are ignored mostly. Therefore, it is indispensable to bring up methodological discussions in order to point out new approaches, mention previously discussed topics, and create awareness on the issue. In this paper, after a general introduction I will emphasize the importance of dialectology. Then I will discuss as basic problem a common tendency in Turkish dialectology to give many samples without sufficient analyses. Additionally I will point out the problems by using synchronic and diachronic analyses simultaneously in Turkish dialectology as a second methodological problem and emphasize the priority of synchrony in dialectology. Finally, it will be explained why non-standard forms occurred in dialects could not be originated from the standard language.
