About Dictionary of Local Dialectology Terms

Local dialectology (‘ağızbilimi’ in Turkish), commonly referred as dialectology in the world, has gradually been separated from linguistics/grammar and dialectology in terms of its purposes, work field, terms and methodology. Using the Turkish term “ağızbilimi” instead of “diyalektoloji” is not an arbitrary choice. There is already a deep separation among the terms ‘language’, ‘dialect’ and ‘local dialect’. Therefore, despite the fact that they have a lot in common, linguistics/grammar, dialectology and local dialectology have gradually become separate fields in science. Consequently, it is an important need to prepare dictionaries of terminology in the field of local dialectology. There are sufficient amounts of dictionaries in the fields of linguistics/grammar in Turkey, but dictionaries of dialectology or local dialectology have not been prepared yet. In the world, local dialectology terms commonly take place in dictionaries of dialectology. In Turkey, however, such terms commonly take place in general dictionaries of linguistics/grammar which includes phonetics, morphology, syntax and semantics. The purpose of the present study is to create a list of local dialectology terms based on various studies on local dialect. This list is intended to be a starter for creation of such dictionaries.
